BULLETIN 22 February 1:30 pm
Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# A Kruger National Park employee was attacked by a hyena while sleeping at the Berg en Dal staff living quarters yesterday morning. SANParks spokesperson Isaac Mahlangu says the woman sustained injuries to her arm and is in stable condition. The hyena has been euthanised. This follows another recent attack, where a giraffe injured a couple in Greenstone Wildlife Estate, Mpumalanga, during an afternoon walk on Valentine’s Day. Sakkie Dednam says his wife, Yvonne, suffered memory loss due to severe head injuries.
# Two white Bengal tigers previously housed in a Boksburg suburb have found a new home in an NSPCA-accredited wildlife facility in the Free State. The tigers were first spotted on a property next to a daycare centre in 2021. National Council of SPCAs says the tigers’ release was both magnificent and heartbreaking, with the animals taking excited leaps to freedom while interacting with grass for the first time.
# And finally: An orphaned elephant calf named Phabeni has been embraced by an elephant mom and her daughter at the Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development Sanctuary in Limpopo. Phabeni, rescued in November last year at just four months old, has found solace and care within the adoptive herd. Setombe, the elephant mom, has welcomed Phabeni into the fold, allowing the little one to suckle, marking the beginning of an unexpected bond.
