# Eskom has signed a memorandum of cooperation with BYD Auto South Africa in a move toward cleaner mobility. This follows the launch of the BYD Dolphin Surf, which is a compact, affordable all-electric vehicle. Eskom’s spokesperson, Daphne Mokwena, says together with BYD, they will support South Africa’s national drive to decarbonise transport and position the country as a hub for EV adoption. She says future discussions may also consider renewable-powered ultra-fast charging hubs, and recycling and repurposing used EV batteries for energy storage:
# As South Africa celebrates national recycling week, Polyco has announced that its packa-ching programme has paid 37-million-rand to communities and diverted 31-million kilogrammes of waste from landfills. The plastics recycling organisation’s initiative uses 47 mobile buy-back centres to bring recycling infrastructure and cashless rewards to underserved areas, creating jobs and economic opportunities. Polyco’s Chantal Philander says 458-thousand tonnes of plastic waste have been diverted since 2022:
# And finally: The City of Cape Town’s Urban Waste Management Directorate is stepping up its efforts to keep communities clean. This is through enforcing waste by-law compliance among businesses and building awareness among residents. The directorate’s By-law Enforcement Unit recently conducted inspections of local businesses to ensure compliance with the Integrated Waste Management Plan. Mayoral committee member for Urban Waste Management, Grant Twigg, says they are reducing the burden on landfill sites, limiting illegal dumping, and encouraging recycling and waste minimisation:
