# The Standard Bank Centre of Excellence for Hydrogen Energy at Gauteng’s Vaal University of Technology will advance hydrogen research, innovation, and sustainable practices in South Africa. The university is currently the only African partner in a 13-member European Union hydrogen consortium. The centre will officially be launched on Thursday. Standard Bank says its commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050 aligns seamlessly with this centre, which will showcase the power of partnership in driving Africa’s green energy future.
# Pikitup has temporarily closed the Robinson landfill in Johannesburg following a fire outbreak. The waste management company’s spokesperson, Muzi Mkhwanazi, says the move is to prioritise the safety of staff, service providers, and residents, while ensuring emergency services can fight the blaze without disruption. He confirmed that the cause of the fire is still under investigation:
# And finally: A massive rescue operation is underway in Afghanistan, after a strong earthquake and multiple aftershocks flattened homes in a remote, mountainous region, killing more than 800 people. The earthquake struck just before midnight, shaking buildings from Kabul to neighbouring Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad. The majority of Afghans live in low-rise, mud-brick homes that are vulnerable to collapse.
