BULLETIN 17 June 1:30 pm
Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# South African farmers are earning millions of rand through climate-friendly practices by trading carbon credits. A programme rewarding sustainable farming, AgriCarbon, has paid out nearly five-million-rand in its first round to farmers reducing emissions through methods like low-till farming and cover cropping. CEO Hermann Oelsner says the initiative helps farmers tackle climate change while boosting income. He adds agriculture remains a key player in South Africa’s green economy.
# The National Sea Rescue Institute is calling on South Africans to take the Winter Solstice Plunge on Saturday, which is also the longest night of the year. South Africans are urged to take a sea dive or a bucket of icy water as a symbolic challenge supporting life saving missions. The event raises funds for rescue operations, survival swim training, and water safety education. From coastal volunteers to inland supporters, all are urged to take the icy leap and make a real difference this winter.
# And finally: Ethologist and conservationist Jane Goodall’s chimpanzee conservation project in Tanzania is facing a major financial setback. This follows the United States Agency for International Development’s withdrawal of its pledged 548-million-rand funding. Launched in 2023, the Hope Through Action initiative is intended to protect endangered chimpanzees through reforestation and community-led methodology. The overall chimpanzee population numbers have fallen to below 340-thousand.
