BULLETIN 24 March 1:30 pm
Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# Polyco, in partnership with Pick n Pay School Club, has provided two-thousand-675 primary schools across South Africa with educational posters promoting plastic recycling. This initiative is part of Polyco’s MillionPlus programme, supporting over two-million learners and educators. Each school, since the start of the year has received interactive calendars and materials to encourage recycling and environmental awareness. The two organisations say this collaboration aims to inspire sustainability and environmental care from a young age.
# The University of Pretoria says a range of recent projects at the Hatfield Campus is reaffirming its commitment to optimal stormwater management, rainwater harvesting and reducing its environmental footprint. The institution has recently implemented a parking lot rainwater collection system, which enables the collection of rainwater off a new lightweight roof that provides shade to cars parking in selected campus bays. The university says the water collected will eventually help irrigate the Manie van der Schijff Botanical Gardens, which covers about 3.5 hectares of the campus.
# And finally: Kenya has joined the over 60 countries that support a carbon levy on the shipping industry, which will fund climate adaptation and mitigation for vulnerable nations. Governments are nearing an agreement on a carbon levy on shipping emissions, with a decision slated for next month. Shipping accounts for three-percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Kenya’s special envoy for Climate Change, Ali Mohamed, says investments in zero-emission vessels, renewable fuels, and resilient port infrastructure can ensure developing nations thrive in a low-carbon economy.
