Eco Minute 13:30
BULLETIN 14 March 1:30 pm
Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# The City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department has launched a new initiative called Adopt a Tree. This encourages residents to plant and care for trees, actively contributing to the metro’s development as an urban forest. Mayoral committee member for Community Services and Health, Francine Higham, says this initiative aligns with the metro’s broader vision to enhance biodiversity, build climate resilience, and promote greener urban spaces:
# Environmentalists have criticised US president Donald Trump’s plan to roll back around 31 major climate policies. The Environmental Protection Agency recently announced it will undo rules that would have pushed power plants and carmakers toward cleaner forms of energy. The Centre for Biological Diversity’s Climate Law Institute says the Trump administration is determined to put polluter profits ahead of people’s lives. The agency’s Lee Zeldin says they will abide by the rule of law to protect consumer choice and the environment:
# And finally: Australia’s prime minister, Anthony Albanese, is the latest to criticise a US influencer whose video of her taking a wild baby wombat away from its distressed mother has angered conservationists. Albanese suggested Sam Jones should try it with animals that can actually fight back, like a crocodile. She was filmed picking up the joey while its mother ran after them. Wombats are legally protected species in Australia. Babies share a strong bond with their mothers, and any separation can be distressing and harmful.
