BULLETIN 12 March 1:30 pm
Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for damaging winds over much of the Western Cape from this evening until Friday. Strong south-easterly winds are expected between Saldanha Bay and Plettenberg Bay. Cape Town Disaster Risk Management’s spokesperson, Sonica Lategan, says potential impacts could include uprooted trees, damage to roofs and an increased risk of runaway fires:
# The DA has welcomed a 47-percent rise in recycling in the Western Cape since 2019. Waste recovery grew from over 500-thousand tonnes in 2019 to over 800-thousand tonnes in 2023. Municipal composting also surged by 61-percent, supporting food gardens and community projects. The DA’s Dave Bryant says this progress reduces landfill waste and boosts the green economy. He calls for continued investment in recycling infrastructure:
# And finally: A 59-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter in connection with the collision between a cargo ship and an oil tanker off the British coast in the North Sea on Monday. The Portuguese-flagged Solong cargo ship collided with the US-registered Stena Immaculate, which was transporting fuel on behalf of the US military. One crew member died, and 36 were rescued. The UK’s Humberside police say a criminal investigation into the cause of the collision is now underway.
