BULLETIN 29 January 1:30 pm
Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# The DA in the Western Cape is calling on minister of Fisheries, Forestry and the Environment, Dion George, to provide an update on the investigation into the recent oil spill in the area between Hout Bay and Kommetjie in Cape Town. The spill left at least 19 critically endangered African penguins contaminated. The DA’s Dave Bryant says it is vital that the source of the spill is identified as soon as possible to avoid any further threat to wildlife:
# Table Mountain authorities will soon deploy firefighter drones to detect and extinguish fires in inaccessible areas. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research has licensed its K-Line fire sensor, to be integrated into drones for the tracking and combatting of small-scale fires in real-time. The technology, previously used in satellites, seeks to enhance wildfire detection while reducing false alarms and costs. This technology will be used to support and strengthen Western Cape fire services with advanced aerial solutions.
# And finally: Leading global builder and operator of renewable-energy projects JUWI Renewable Energies is building three utility-scale solar photovoltaic projects in South Africa. The projects, which have an investment value of six-billion-rand, include a 120-megawatt solar PV facility in the Free State and a 120-megawatt solar PV facility for Sasol and Air Liquide. JUWI’s managing director, Richard Doyle, says they are proud to deliver innovative projects that enhance energy resilience, reduce emissions, and accelerate progress toward net zero.
