Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# President Donald Trump has for the second time signed an executive order to begin the process of pulling the US out of the Paris Climate Agreement. This comes after global temperatures in 2024 rose more than 1.5 Celsius above pre-industrial levels for the first time in a calendar year. The US will now join Iran, Yemen, and Libya as the only countries to currently stand outside the agreement. Trump describes the agreement as an unfair, one-sided rip-off:
# The United Nations Environment Programme says the fast fashion industry is the second-biggest consumer of water and is responsible for about ten-percent of global carbon emissions. The term refers to cheaply produced and priced garments, which copy the latest catwalk styles. The UN says the industry dries up water sources and pollutes rivers and streams, while 85-percent of all textiles go to dumps each year. According to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, emissions from textile manufacturing alone are projected to skyrocket by 60-percent by 2030.
# And finally: Staff at a Japanese aquarium came up with a creative way of perking up a lonely sunfish. The fish became unwell when the Kaikyokan Aquarium in Shimonoseki closed for renovation last month. According to staff this specific sunfish is curious and would swim up to the front of its tank whenever people came to visit. It showed a dramatic improvement after cardboard cutout faces and aquarium uniforms on hangers were stuck to the glass of its tank.
