Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# Africa’s energy crisis is said to be intensifying amid a growing population and underdeveloped grids. Experts predict that by 2050, sub-Saharan Africa’s population will double, increasing energy demand. Oilprice.com reports that the continent, least responsible for global emissions, will continue facing immense climate vulnerability, prompting a push to bypass fossil fuels for renewables. A survey report by Queen Mary University of London also found that legal disputes may surge in the coming years as many nations tackle energy transitions and tax reforms.
# The European Commission says with air traffic expected to grow, aviation, like all other transport modes, needs to play its part in delivering climate neutrality in Europe by 2050. According to the International Air Transport Association, it is anticipated that traffic in the aviation industry in 2050 will likely generate 1.8-billion tonnes of carbon emissions if fuelled by traditional jet kerosene. The commission says to achieve net-zero emissions, it is projected that 65-percent of the total emissions reductions will need to be accomplished using Sustainable Aviation Fuel.
# And finally: Deforestation remains the primary threat to tropical forests, but scientists warn that nutrient enrichment from agriculture and fossil fuels also poses significant risks. An international study published in Current Forestry Reports reveals that excess nutrients boost fast-growing species, reducing biodiversity and weakening forests. Researchers warn that this has the potential to disrupt ecosystems and carbon storage. The findings call for urgent nutrient management to protect tropical forests as they are deemed critical for biodiversity, climate stability, and human sustainability.
