# Los Angeles officials say the city is undertaking urgent preparations after the National Weather Service forecasted close to hurricane-force winds this week. Three wildfires are still burning in the city, the largest, the Palisades fire, is just 14-percent contained. Some 24 people have been killed by the ongoing wildfires, with at least 23 still unaccounted for. LA County Fire Chief, Anthony Marrone, says they are better prepared for the coming severe fire weather event:
# The City of Tshwane says its pilot project to divert shredded garden waste at five of its garden transfer facilities is helping to relieve pressure from landfill sites. The project currently diverts about 29-thousand-897 tonnes of shredded material per year to private composting companies. The metro’s spokesperson, Lindela Mashigo, says they are aiming to upscale this project to the other four garden sites in Tshwane:
# And finally: The endangered Persian Leopard has been spotted in Kazakhstan, a rare sighting in the Central Asian country, where the feline’s presence had not been confirmed before. There are only around thousand Persian Leopards left in the world. Also known as the Caucasian or Anatolian Leopard, the big cat is known to live in the Caucasus, Turkey, Iran, Iraq and some Central Asian states. It is considered “endangered”, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species.
