# The City of Ekurhuleni urges residents to take safety precautions as a heatwave continues until Sunday. With high temperatures forecast, the city warns of the risks of dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Residents are advised not to leave open flames unattended and to stay hydrated by drinking water or sports drinks. The city also cautions against swimming in unauthorised areas and reminds parents to closely supervise children near water.
# University of Pretoria’s marine biologist and senior lecturer, Romina Henriques, has been awarded a C2 rating for her research by the National Research Foundation. Her recognised research is on the unique marine fish populations of Southern Africa. The rating recognises her significant contributions to marine biology and the study of the evolution of marine species. Henriques says her research is fuelled by the knowledge that climate change threatens to alter ocean temperatures, current patterns and salinity levels, which is affecting the survivability of marine species.
# And finally: A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northern California yesterday, triggering a brief tsunami warning for at least 5.3-million people living on the West Coast. The tsunami threat was later lifted. Thirty aftershocks were reported with more than ten-thousand people left without power in Humboldt county. The earthquake was among the largest recorded in California in recent years. Governor Gavin Newsom says officials are now turning their focus to the aftermath of the earthquake:
