Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# The 2025 City Nature Challenge is inviting individuals worldwide to document urban biodiversity, which will help scientists track and understand real-time changes in ecosystems. Through the iNaturalist app, participants can photograph wild plants, animals, or fungi in their respective surroundings. The collection of photographs will contribute valuable data for biodiversity research and conservation. Participants are encouraged to be mindful of their surroundings when exploring and documenting wildlife.
# Norway’s International Development minister, Anne Beathe Tvinnereim, warns that the world will be unable to cope with the volume of plastic waste in ten years unless countries agree to curb production. The final round of United Nations talks on the first global treaty to end plastic waste gets underway in Busan, South Korea, this week. The use of plastic could triple globally by 2060. Tvinnereim, who is also co-chair of a coalition of 60 countries pushing for a strong global plastics treaty, says the world needs increased recycling and waste management.
# And finally: US president Joe Biden says the COP29 climate finance agreement puts the world one significant step closer to achieving its climate goals. Countries have agreed to a target for richer polluting countries to drum up 5.4-trillion-rand a year by 2035, to help poorer nations curb and adapt to climate change. The agreement was reached at the COP29 summit in Baku, Azerbaijan. Meanwhile, UK’s Energy minister Ed Miliband says the deal is a huge opportunity for British businesses to invest in other markets.
