# The City of Tshwane will co-host and co-chair the 2025 Urban20 cycle alongside the City of Johannesburg. This declaration was confirmed at the U20 Summit convened by C40 and United Cities and Local Governments in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Tshwane mayor’s spokesperson, Zintle Mahlati, says the U20 is an important gathering that seeks to ensure that urban priorities are tied to climate action and sustainable development, and serves as a unique platform for cities to influence the global agenda:
# According to new research, tropical wetlands are releasing unprecedented levels of methane, threatening global efforts to combat climate change. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, is 80 times more effective than carbon dioxide at trapping heat over 20 years. Studies attribute the surge to tropical regions, with the Congo, Southeast Asia, the Amazon, and southern Brazil as major contributors. Despite global pledges to cut methane by 30-percent from 2020 levels by 2030, emissions from fossil fuels remain high.
# And finally: Joe Biden has become the first sitting US president to visit the world’s largest tropical rainforest, the Amazon. He engaged with local and Indigenous leaders working to conserve and protect this critical ecosystem. The Amazon region stores massive amounts of the world’s carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas driving climate change. Biden has signed a proclamation designating November 17 as International Conservation Day. He described the battle against climate change as a defining cause of his presidency:
