Eco Minute 13:30
BULLETIN 6 November 1:30 pm
Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# Environmental groups, including the Green Connection and Extinction Rebellion, are calling for government to stop partnering with fossil fuel companies amid the Africa Energy Week in Cape Town. They argue the event’s high costs exclude civil society from vital discussions that focus on oil and gas investments. The Green Connection’s Lisa Makaula says they plan to protest outside the venue, calling for sustainable development and protections for fishing communities affected by fossil fuel projects:
# The Freedom Front Plus in Gauteng has condemned the reckless pollution of tributaries and the mismanagement of the Luipaardsvlei landfill. The landfill has been closed for weeks on the instruction of the Gauteng Department of Environmental Management, and the waste is currently taken to nearby landfills. The FF Plus’ Jaco Mulder says they are concerned by the impact of sewage pollution on public health, agriculture, economic development and the natural environment in general:
# And finally: China has called for the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference in Azerbaijan to lead discussions on carbon border taxes. The European Union’s carbon policies, like the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, have faced criticism from the BASIC country group which also includes Brazil, India and South Africa, as unfair and protectionist. The EU says it is needed to stop European industries, which pay a fee for their CO2 emissions, from being undercut by cheap imports from countries with weaker climate policies.
