# Government plans to prioritise climate resilience and disaster preparedness from next year, aiming to protect communities and infrastructure against the growing impacts of climate change. Key initiatives include building more sustainable infrastructure, enhancing early warning systems, and improving emergency response capabilities. According to the United Nations World Institute for Development Economics Research, by 2050, climate change is likely to have an impact on water availability in most of South Africa. The department’s spokesperson, Wisane Mavasa, says they recognise the urgency of transitioning to a low-carbon, climate-resilient economy:
# And finally: A report by the European Geosciences Union has warned that reaching net zero in the next few decades will not bring an immediate end to global warming. Global greenhouse gas emissions hit record highs in 2023, at the same time, Earth experienced its hottest year. Countries that have signed up to the Paris Climate Agreement, aim to reach net zero by 2050. The report shows delaying net-zero by five years will result in a higher global average surface temperature, and reduced sea ice extent for many centuries.
