# US president Joe Biden says Hurricane Milton could be one of the worst storms to hit Florida in over a century. The hurricane classified as category four is expected to bring life-threatening conditions to parts of the state when it makes landfall today. The storm comes less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene hit, killing at least 225 people across Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina. Biden has urged those in the storm’s path to evacuate immediately:
# The World Meteorological Organisation says 2023’s combination of both prolonged droughts and devastating floods, can be attributed to the climate crisis and the naturally occurring La Niña to El Niño transition. According to the organisation’s State of Global Water Resources report, last year was the driest for global rivers in 30 years, while glaciers suffered the largest mass loss in 50 years. The organisation’s secretary-general, Celeste Saulo, says melting ice and glaciers threaten long-term water security for many millions of people.
# And finally: Zero Carbon Charge has launched an 11.4-billion-rand development of off-grid electric vehicle charging stations in the Eastern Cape. This forms part of a venture that aims to have 120 off-grid stations nationally for charging electric passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. Zero Carbon Charge’s, Joubert Roux, says this marks a significant milestone in South Africa’s efforts towards building a sustainable transport network that contributes to climate emission reduction:
