# The Presidential Climate Commission sees just energy transition as a key moment in South African history. Speaking at the Windaba 2024 Conference, the commission’s employment strategy head, Devan Pillay, said just energy transition aims to reverse the country’s economic decline by skilling workers across sectors, and ensuring local-level implementation. Meanwhile, the National Business Initiative’s Abigail Khuluse stressed the importance of aligning skills with the transition to a low-carbon economy.
# The City of Cape Town says it is excited to host Prince William for the Earthshot Prize Awards, set to take place during Earthshot Week in November. The Earthshot Prize is an ambitious global environmental prize which aims to discover, spotlight and scale the world’s most innovative climate and environmental solutions. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis says this is the first time the annual celebration will be held in South Africa:
# And finally: MetPac-SA has expanded the Trash4Treats competition to 25 schools in Gauteng and ten schools in KwaZulu-Natal alongside existing participants in the Western Cape. This is in partnership with Mr Bin and Phoenix For The Planet. The Trash4Treats competition engages learners by encouraging them to collect metal cans, amongst other recyclables, which are then recycled to generate funds for their schools. MetPac-SA CEO, Kishan Singh, says schools that collect the most recyclable waste per capita will win a portion of 60-thousand-rand for upgrades to their school.
