Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# The European Union will make available two grants totalling 628-million-rand to promote the sustainable development of the green hydrogen value chains in South Africa. The grants are additional to the EU’s Just Energy Transition Partnership funding with the country. EU Energy Commissioner, Kadri Simson, says the funding shows the EU Global Gateway strategy in action, boosting smart, clean and secure connections in the energy and transport sections:
# The Vaal River has officially reopened for boating season after 398 hectares of invasive plants, including water lettuce and hyacinth, were removed. The overgrowth had reduced water visibility to less than one hectare, crippling tourism and boating activities. Local government, community groups, and Rand Water collaborated on the ten-million-rand effort. The reopening seeks to bring relief to the Vaal’s hospitality industry and the Spring sailing season.
# And, MTN Western Cape has partnered with Green Riders to boost eco-friendly delivery using e-bikes. An e-bike saves an average of 249 grams of CO2 emissions for every kilometre travelled. Green Riders’ mission is to generate 50-thousand jobs in the delivery sector over the next five years. MTN’s goal is to achieve net zero emissions by 2040. Green Riders founder, Craig Atkinson, says this partnership emphasises environmental responsibility while also acknowledging the business value of e-bikes.
