# The City of Johannesburg says collaborative efforts are underway to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Air pollution has become a persistent issue in the metro, particularly during winter. The primary source of air pollution is industrial activity, domestic waste burning, mine tailings dumps, and power plants. The city’s spokesperson, Virgil James, says transport emissions contribute approximately 30-percent to the overall air pollution load in the metro:
# The successful completion of a clothing, textile, footwear, and leather waste disposal pilot project has created opportunities for similar initiatives. Managed by the National Cleaner Production Centre South Africa, the project recycled one-thousand-800 tons of seized illegal imports. Project manager André Page says the model used for the project was aimed at creating jobs, minimising waste, and offering a suitable opportunity for the South African Revenue Service and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, to address the problems of illicit goods:
# And finally, Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has launched the city’s annual Spring Clean Cape Town campaign. As part of the campaign, the public is being encouraged to get involved by picking up litter or organising a spring clean in communities. Hill-Lewis says this year’s campaign edition will have a big focus on the metro’s anti-litter mascot Bingo:
