Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# The Constitutional Court has dismissed Shell and Impact Africa’s appeal against a ruling that annulled their exploration rights off the Eastern Cape’s Wild Coast. The court determined the application had no reasonable prospects of success. The court is expected to hear local communities’ concerns regarding the government’s consideration of the renewal application. The communities argue that the previous rulings fail to protect their rights, emphasising inadequate public consultation.
# At least three people have been killed after a typhoon hit southern Japan, sparking fears of flooding, landslides and extensive damage to buildings. Another person is missing, and more than a dozen are injured after Typhoon Shanshan hit the southern island of Kyshu and ripped through several regions. Authorities have issued evacuation orders to millions of residents due to torrential rain and strong winds of up to 180 kilometres per hour. Shanshan is the latest harsh weather system to hit Japan. Typhoon Ampil led to blackouts and evacuations earlier this month.
# And, hundreds of thousands of dead fish have blanketed a Greek tourist port, leaving authorities scrambling to clean it up. Authorities now face a race against time to collect and remove the tonnes of dead fish before the smell reaches nearby restaurants and hotels. Volos mayor Achilleas Beos warned the rotting fish could create an environmental disaster for other species in the area. The disaster is just the latest impact of extreme weather linked to climate change. Greece has faced severe wildfires this year, and erratic rainfall has caused flooding too.
