Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# Eskom will replace its declining coal capacity with clean-energy options, aligning with national policy and the Just Energy Transition. Addressing a coal and energy transition conference, Eskom general manager for primary energy Dan Mashigo said Eskom’s 20-GigaWatts-plus generation project pipeline includes six-GigaWatts of solar cells, four-GigaWatts of hybrid wind-cell-battery projects. In addition, the project also includes four-GigaWatts of gas-to-power, three-GigaWatts of nuclear, and 3.5-GigaWatts of hydro, wind, and battery storage.
Meanwhile, coal mining group Seriti Resources is advancing into wind energy through Seriti Green. The first project, a 4.8-billion-rand wind farm in Mpumalanga, is currently under construction. The 155-megawatts project marks the first phase of a 900-megawatts project which Seriti Green aims to build over the next three years. Seriti Resources CEO, Mike Teke, says future projects will further align with their clean, green energy initiatives:
# And finally: Forestry, Fisheries, and Environment minister Dion George has praised president Cyril Ramaphosa’s signing of the Climate Change Bill into law. George called it a pivotal step in South Africa’s climate strategy, aiming to reduce emissions, enhance resilience, and create green jobs.
