Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# New research has found that the effects of climate change have altered Earth’s rotation, causing the lengthening of days. According to a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, as polar and glacial ice melts because of global warming, water that was once concentrated at the top and the bottom of the globe is getting redistributed toward the equator. Researchers add that this extra mass around Earth’s middle slows its rotation, which in turn has a lengthening effect on the days.
# The iMasons Climate Accord’s governing body has urged the digital infrastructure industry to adopt environmental product declarations for building and operating data centres. Major technology companies like Microsoft, Google, Meta and Amazon Web Services have net-zero carbon emissions commitments in place. ICA executive director Miranda Gardiner says environmental product declarations are crucial in transforming the future of digital infrastructure to be more resilient and climate-positive.
# And, a Rent-to-Own Electricity and Campion Model has been introduced to the Nomzamo Agricultural Village in Ermelo, Mpumalanga. This was done by Peco Power, a trailblazer in sustainable energy solutions developed at the University of the Witwatersrand. Nomzamo residents have struggled with consistent electricity access. Wits says through Peco Power, residents now have access to PowerBrick, which is a solar-powered smart energy solution for communities requiring off-grid electrification. Residents access their PowerBrick system at 100-rand a month rent-to-own subscription, for 12 months.
