Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# The National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has called for transparency from Cape Nature regarding the well-being of an elephant at the Fairy Glen Nature Reserve near Worcester, Letaba. The NSPCA accuses Cape Nature of withholding compliance information. Spokesperson Jacques Peacock says Letaba’s diet is limited, and he demands full disclosure on Fairy Glen’s compliance and diet protocol. He emphasises Letaba’s need for a specialised diet and criticises reliance on public donations for sustenance.
# The African Union has launched a strategy to combat desertification (desert-tification) on the continent for the next ten years. The Great Green Wall Initiative aims to restore landscapes and build resilient communities in Africa’s dry lands. The initiative covers 36 African countries. African Union Development Agency’s Estherine Lisinge-Fotabong says the strategy is aligned with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the United Nations Convention to Combat Climate Change.
# And, the global agrifood system presents a huge opportunity to cut almost a third of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions through affordable and readily available actions. This is according to a new report by the World Bank. The report notes that the agrifood system is a huge, untapped source of low-cost climate change action. The World Bank’s Axel van Trotsenburg says simply changing how middle-income countries use land, such as forests and ecosystems, for food production can cut agrifood emissions by a third by 2030.
