BULLETIN 24 April 1:30 pm
Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# AgriSA says climate-smart agriculture is crucial in combating climate change. According to the organisation, human activities, notably burning fossil fuels and habitat destruction, are key drivers of climate change. Agriculture, a major contributor to climate change, is also highly vulnerable to its impacts like extreme weather events and pest outbreaks. Climate-smart agriculture, encompassing practices like conservation and regenerative agriculture, includes practices that mitigate and adapt to climate change, promoting sustainable farming. It seeks to increase productivity, enhance resilience, and reduce emissions.
# The green hydrogen sector now has a digital platform on which users can buy and sell green hydrogen. Launched by French energy transition group Lhyfe, the Green Hydrogen Marketplace seeks to accelerate decarbonisation efforts. Lhyfe founder and CEO, Matthieu Guesné, says the first phase of the marketplace will enable buyers with their hydrogen transport solutions, and producers to cooperate to strengthen the green hydrogen offer across Europe:
# And finally: Greenpeace USA says the pollution crisis cannot be solved unless plastic production is reduced and restricted. About 400 million tonnes of plastic is produced every year, much of which ends up in the oceans or landfills. Countries are currently taking part in the fourth Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee in Canada, where a future legally binding treaty to cut pollution is being negotiated. Greenpeace USA’s Graham Forbes says it is clear the world cannot manage the amount of plastic it is producing, as only ten-percent of it gets recycled.
