Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# Tshwane’s Community and Social Development Services Department has welcomed the latest inscription of South African human rights and liberation struggle sites in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The sites include the Union Buildings and Constitution Hill. The department says this inscription is significant as these sites are legally protected by international treaties and recognised as holding importance for all of humanity. It adds that the sites are culturally and historically significant.
# The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment is considering a Promotion of Access to Information Act application from Just Share and the amaBhungane Centre for Investigative Journalism. The application is for information on closed-door meetings relating to South Africa’s policy and regulatory approach to climate change mitigation and adaptation. It also relates to other interactions on the country’s energy mix, including the Just Transition to a low-carbon economy. The department says it has not conducted any secret meetings with business on the review of the country’s climate change commitments.
# And finally, Zero Carbon Logistics has partnered with Chinese manufacturer Sany to develop six off-grid electric truck charging stations along the N3 highway. These renewable energy stations will serve electric trucks between Johannesburg and Durban. Zero Carbon Logistics aims to establish a 120-station network nationwide by 2027, promoting net-zero transport. Co-founder Joubert Roux emphasised the need for government incentives for electric vehicles.
