# Electricity minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa attributes today’s escalation to stage 6 load-shedding to the over-commitment of reserves. He addressing the media on the increased power cuts which will be in place until 5 am on Monday. Ramokgopa says the loss of five generating units in the past 24 hours resulted in a severe shortage of generation capacity:
Meanwhile, the Turkish power ships operator Karpowership has received environmental authorisation for a gas-fired power plant in Saldanha Bay on the West Coast. This follows approval of its 450-megawatt plant in Richards Bay on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast, despite legal challenges. The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment gave Karpowership permission to install a 320-megawatt plant in Saldanha. The company says the approvals are critical milestones in its journey to combat South Africa’s energy crisis. It also wants to install a plant at Ngqura in the Eastern Cape.
# Motorists in South Africa have expressed concerns regarding the shortage of replacement windscreens in the country. Earlier today, Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson, Sello Maremane, emphasised that driving with a broken windscreen is against the law and could lead to prosecution. In response to the statement, motorist Thabo Makutoane says that many motorists fear possible prosecution and impounding of their cars leading many to seek windscreen solutions outside of South Africa:
# A young South Korean woman was sentenced to life behind bars after murdering a stranger out of curiosity. Twenty-three-year-old Jun Yoo-jung is described as being obsessed with crime shows and novels, and had a high psychopath test score. She met an unnamed English-language teacher through an app after apparently looking for a victim for months, and stabbed her to death. Jung then took a taxi to leave the body in a suitcase in the woods, and the taxi driver tipped off police.
# Motorsport: This weekend’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is the last race of the Formula One season. Dutch driver Max Verstappen already clinched his third world championship, while his Red Bull teammate, Sergio Perez of Mexico, will finish in second place and Mercedes’ British driver, Lewis Hamilton, in third. Red Bull has also secured the constructors’ championships, but there is still a fight for second place. Mercedes leads Ferrari by just four points and Charles Leclerc hopes Ferrari can end the season on a high note:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-93-cents and the euro at 20-rand-68-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-84-cents and Bitcoin trades at 37-thousand-671-dollars-81-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-2-dollars-11-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 81-dollars-9-cents a barrel.
