# KwaZulu-Natal police are investigating a case of murder after five armed suspects entered a residence in the early hours, fatally shooting four family members. The victims include a 64-year-old man, his wife, their 32-year-old son, and a 19-year-old nephew. A neighbour, who is reportedly a girlfriend to one of the deceased, was also shot in the legs and is currently recovering in hospital. Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says this is the second incident in the same house within a year:
# The South African Weather Service says a prolonged heatwave is expected to persist across various regions today. Gauteng, the Eastern Cape, the Free State, and the Northern Cape are expected to experience very hot weather conditions. The weather service also warns of an elevated risk of wildfires due to extremely high fire danger conditions in Limpopo, the Eastern Cape, the Western Cape, and the Northern Cape. The public is strongly cautioned to remain hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the intense heat, exercise vigilance and adhere to local authorities’ advisories.
# Namibia anticipates a moderation in gross domestic product growth, projecting 3.3-percent this year and 2.8-percent in 2024, down from 4.6-percent in 2022. FNB Namibia economist, Ruusa Nandago, attributes the decline to dry weather conditions. Nandago’s Quarterly Economics report highlights a compounding factor of a consumption slowdown. Nandago says the officially declared drought is expected to hamper growth this year, affecting employment and output in the agricultural sector, with added pressure on food prices:
# Cricket: Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya will play for Mumbai Indians again in next year’s edition of the Indian Premier League. He made his IPL debut for the team in 2015. Mumbai has traded Pandya from Gujarat Titans for his existing player fee of 33.8-million-rand after he led Gujarat to the title in their debut season in 2022. The team was runners-up earlier this year. Indian opener Shubman Gill will be Gujarat’s new captain. Pandya replaces Australian Cameron Green, who moves to Royal Challengers Bangalore.
# Financial indicators: The dollar trades at 18-rand-68-cents and the euro at 20-rand-46-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-59-cents and Bitcoin trades at 37-thousand-123-dollars-64-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-12-dollars-9-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 79-dollars-56-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The George Municipality in the Western Cape is inviting restaurants, bars and cafés to gear up for a summer of Al Fresco Dining. The municipality is offering free pavement permits to hospitality businesses, providing restaurants with additional floor space to place their tables. Businesses can apply free of charge for a licence to seat customers outside from 15 December to 19 January. The municipality aims to boost the hospitality industry by taking advantage of the warmer weather and supporting business recovery by creating a festive atmosphere in the city while offering greater patron capacities.
