# The DA urges voters to exercise choice on their votes
# And soccer: An Italian court orders Juventus to pay Cristiano Ronaldo 196-million-rand owed to him
# Cosatu has called on government to intervene and prevent job losses at the Post Office. More workers are expected to be laid off. In Limpopo, 300 employees have until the end of April to serve at their respective branches. Provincial secretary Hangwani Mashau is calling for a solution to the retrenchment crisis:
# DA chief whip Siviwe Gwarube encourages eligible voters to practice freedom of choice as they cast their ballots. Speaking at a political debate at the University of Fort Hare in partnership with Mail and Guardian, Gwarube acknowledged the significance of coalitions in the political landscape, citing successful examples in African countries like Kenya. She stresses the importance of free and fair elections and the potential effectiveness of coalition governments:
# Stock markets in Asia and Europe rose today with traders mulling the outlook for US interest rates. Oil extended the previous day’s losses due to softer demand in the United States and fading fears of a regional war in the Middle East. Investors brushed off a sell-off on Wall Street where tech firms were hit by worries that rates will be kept elevated longer than expected. Comments from Federal Reserve officials reinforced the view that sticky inflation and a resilient US economy will keep the bank from easing monetary policy anytime soon.
# Soccer: An Italian court has ordered Juventus to pay it’s former player Cristiano Ronaldo 196-million-rand in salary owed to him. Portugal’s captain agreed to defer his salary when the sport was halted in the 2020/21 season due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He initially demanded 404-millon-rand. The court found he should be paid what he would have received after deductions. Ronaldo left Juventus in 2021 after three seasons in which they won two Serie A titles. He currently plays for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 19-rand-4-cents and the euro at 20-rand-33-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-76-cents and Bitcoin trades at 62-thousand-77-dollars-11-cents. Gold sells at two-thousand-382-dollars-28-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 86-dollars-33-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research has joined BioGeoSCAPES, a global research initiative focusing on understanding future ocean states under climate change scenarios. Led by CSIR principal researcher Tommy Ryan-Keogh, the programme aims to enhance knowledge of microbial biogeochemistry in oceans. Over the next years, BioGeoSCAPES will prioritise activities including modelling, data integration, and standardisation to develop an International Science Plan, expected in the coming months.
