# And, golf: Rama ready to step into Joburg Open history
# Eskom is actively working on interventions to lower load-shedding stages. This comes as load-shedding was escalated from stage 4 to stage 6 for the weekend. Electricity minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa outlined key measures, including the urgent commitment for the return of generational units and the replenishment of emergency reserves. He told the media these interventions are critical to the stability and protection of the grid:
Meanwhile, Eskom’s head of Generation, Bheki Nxumalo, says the high demand for electricity contributed to load-shedding being escalated to stage 6 from yesterday until Monday morning at 5. He addressed the media on the state of the national power grid. Nxumalo reiterates the stance of Electricity minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa that the escalation of load-shedding is also attributed to the failure of some generational units and the imperative to replenish essential resources:
# The ANC must pay a KwaZulu-Natal branding company over 100-million-rand after the ruling party lost a Supreme Court of Appeal challenge. The money is owned to Ezulweni Investments for campaign materials for the 2019 general election. The ANC tried to prove it didn’t have a contractual agreement with the company after the High Court in Johannesburg ruled in May the party was liable for the amount of 102-million-rand plus 10.25-percent interest from May 2019 until August the next year. The appeal court dismissed the application with costs.
# Thirty-nine Palestinians and 13 Israelis have been welcomed home after being released from Israeli prisons and captivity in Gaza, respectively. Ten Thais and one Filipino were also released from Gaza yesterday and remain in Israel. The Israeli group include young children and elderly women. On day one of a tense, temporary ceasefire in the Israel-Gaza war, the Israeli prime minister’s office said it had received the list of the captives to be released today. The released Palestinians are the first of 150, mainly mothers and teenaged boys, due to be freed by Tuesday.
# And, golf: Nikhil Rama goes into the weekend of the Joburg Open with a one-stroke lead. The 22-year-old South African shot his lowest competitive round as a professional – a bogey-free 62 – yesterday to lead the Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour co-sanctioned event on 13 under par. His nearest challenger is former champion Thriston Lawrence, one shot back following a 66. Dean Burmester added a 62 of his own to join Jacques Kruyswijk, who carded a 64, just three shots off the lead.
