# President Cyril Ramaphosa says he does not have any direct and specific information on the alleged misuse of public funds for party political purposes. TimesLive is reporting it has seen the president’s letter addressed to Parliament’s standing committee on public accounts chairperson, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, on the leaked audio. In the letter, Ramaphosa reportedly says the public funding statements he made at the NEC meeting were based on allegations already in the public domain. He says since he became president he has taken a number of steps to uncover and end the misuse of public funds.

# The DA says the Road Accident Fund is a sinking ship. The fund filed an urgent application with the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria to stop the Auditor-General of South Africa from releasing its report and tabling it in Parliament. The audit’s concluded that RAF’s liabilities exceeded 361-billion-rand. The DA’s Chris Hunsinger says the fund knows no end to its financial woes and it seems to be trying to dodge accountability:

# An education activist calls on the Department of Basic Education to provide counselling to undocumented learners traumatised by Operation Dudula. Hendrick Makaneta says children of illegal immigrants are caught in the crossfire between Operation Dudula and undocumented foreigners. Makaneta adds children’s right to learn in a conducive environment must be defended at all costs:

# Sixteen-thousand-186 Covid-19 vaccines have been administered in the past 24 hours in South Africa as one-thousand-649 new cases have been recorded. The majority of new cases are from Gauteng with 35-percent, followed by the Western Cape with 22-percent and KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 14-percent. There has been an increase of 14 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours. A further two Covid-19-related deaths have been reported, bringing the total fatalities to 96-thousand-993 to date. The country’s Covid-19 recovery rate is still around 96-percent.

# President Joe Biden says he has made it clear to Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky, that the US will respond swiftly and decisively to any further Russian aggression against his country. The White House says the two leaders spoke on the phone for nearly an hour yesterday. Russia has denied any plans to invade Ukraine despite the build-up of some 100-thousand soldiers on Ukraine’s borders. Biden and Zelensky have agreed on the need to continue pursuing diplomacy and deterrence in response to Russia’s military build-up.

# Rugby: French club Toulon has confirmed that Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth will be released early from his contract to return to South Africa for personal reasons. He will leave at the end of the current season. Etzebeth says he has the will to give everything with Toulon until the end of the season, to allow the team to perform, to move up in the standings, and to be ambitious in the Challenge Cup. According to reports, the 30-year-old is set to join the Sharks.

# And the financial indicators: The dollar is trading at 15-rand-23-cents and the euro at 17-rand-29-cents. One British pound costs 20-rand-65-cents and Bitcoin trades at 41-thousand-760-dollar-60-cents. Gold is selling at one thousand-854-dollars-54-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 95-dollars-88-cents a barrel.
