# The Joburg Film Festival says acclaimed multiple award winning actor, musician and philanthropist Malik Yoba will attend the event, adding a touch of Hollywood glam. The festival, taking place from the 27th of this month to the third of next month, will feature a diverse range of films from around the world and promises to be an unforgettable cinematic experience for attendees. Yoba has an unwavering dedication to nurture and empower young talent in the industry. With this ongoing commitment to build young people, he will host a master class focused on youth development.
# The Open Book Festival has revealed this year’s line-up of events for the Youth Fest in Cape Town next month. Youth Fest aims to spark creativity, foster a love for literature, and empower the next generation of storytellers. It includes an impressive array of renowned authors, poets, and storytellers, who will lead captivating readings and interactive sessions. Some of the events include Storytime with Makazi Nomabali at the Cape Town Museum of Childhood and Creating Your Character with acclaimed illustrator, Clyde Beech, at the Langa Library.
# The University of Pretoria secured notable positions in both teaching and research in the Times Education World Reputation Rankings 2023. In teaching, the institution upheld its second-place position in South Africa and is ranked in fourth place in the research category. Globally, the university is ranked 395 in the world, 385 in teaching and 398 in research. University of Pretoria’s interim vice-chancellor and principal, Themba Mosia, says second-place standing in South Africa symbolises the institution’s commitment to fostering an environment that encourages critical thinking, innovation and practical learning experiences.
# The non-profit organisation GirlCode is preparing for its tenth annual Hackathon under the theme Empowering Change Across Africa. CEO Zandile Mkwanazi has emphasised the technology empowerment initiative’s impact across ten African cities, highlighting its role in reducing unemployment rates through future-focused opportunities for women. Mkwanazi says the power of technology in shaping a sustainable future and contributing to positive change across the continent, while also encouraging female participation in a male-dominated field is important.
# And finally: Actress and singer, Vanessa Williams, is set to portray Runway‘s intimidating editor-in-chief, Miranda Priestly, in the West End musical The Devil Wears Prada. The show is based on the bestselling novel and hit 2006 movie starring Meryl Streep as Miranda and Anne Hathaway as her less-than-fashion-forward assistant Andy Sachs. The musical will feature an original score by five-time Grammy winner, Elton John, and choreography by Tony winner Jerry Mitchell. It will open at the Dominion Theater in October.
