Good afternoon, here is your Good News:
# South African Airways marked a milestone, celebrating 90-years in aviation. Despite facing near-collapse due to mismanagement and financial turmoil, SAA underwent successful business rescue, steering clear of liquidation. The airline, post-rescue, considered a majority share sale to Takatso Aviation, although the deal remains pending. Speaking at the festivities, Public Enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan assures no further bailouts are needed:
# The City of Cape Town is urging registered non-profit organisations such as shelters and those working with people on the street, to submit their applications for the city’s Winter Readiness Programme. The programme runs from the 29th of April to the 31st of October this year. Mayoral committee member for Community Services and Health, Patricia van der Ross, says the programme allows the city to support organisations that provide shelter for street people by supplementing their available resources:
# City of Tshwane councillor, Cindy Billson, says a bottle cap recycling project in Centurion has made a significant impact on the lives of people with mobility challenges. Lions of Centurion Lifestyle has partnered with Clothes to Good, a textile recycling and disability empowerment organisation. The organisation collects plastic bottle caps, which Lions of Centurion Lifestyle delivers to Billson. The caps are then sold to local recycler Blue Swirl, to raise funds to buy mobility devices and wheelchair adjustments to donate. Billson says this benefits both the environment and those in need.
# Human Settlements minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi, says the handing over of houses is an important step in the government’s commitment to provide decent and affordable housing to disadvantaged citizens. The minister handed over 300 homes to qualifying beneficiaries in the Harry Gwala District in KwaZulu-Natal over the weekend. The ministry’s spokesperson, Hlengiwe Nhlabathi-Mokota, says this is part of the Gudlucingo Rural Housing Project, which is expected to yield one-thousand-500 units upon the completion of the remaining 300 units in phase two:
# And finally: Christopher Nolan’s atomic biopic Oppenheimer won seven BAFTA Film Awards including best film. Nolan, who has previously been nominated for eight Baftas, won best director, while Cillian Murphy won best actor for the film. Poor Things picked up five awards, including best actress for Emma Stone.
