Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up, soccer: Bafana Bafana’s coach, Hugo Broos, says today’s international friendly against Jamaica will be a great opportunity to iron out tactics ahead of Thursday’s World Cup opener against Mexico. South Africa is winless in their last four matches. The striker position is the main issue to address after Bafana held over 85-percent of possession against Nicaragua, failing to convert 22 shots at goal. Broos says Jamaica is a good opponent:
# Rugby: The Blitzboks face Great Britain in their first group match of the Sevens World Championship Tournament in Bordeaux, France, this afternoon. Their next match will be against Kenya tonight, and then against Fiji tomorrow. South Africa is currently on top of the log after winning the first tournament in Hong Kong and reaching the final in Valladolid, Spain, last weekend. The series champion will be crowned on Sunday, with the Blitzboks only needing to reach the final to take the title.
More rugby news: New Zealand referee James Dolman will take charge of the Springboks’ opener in the inaugural Nations Championship against England at Ellis Park on July fourth. Sixteen referees will officiate 18 matches that will be played in the southern hemisphere next month. France’s Pierre Brousset will take the whistle for South Africa versus Scotland in Pretoria, with Irishman Andrew Brace overseeing the Boks’ clash with Wales in Durban. The second leg of the competition will be played in the northern hemisphere in November, leading to the finals weekend in London.
# Tennis: World number 114 Maja Chwalinska’s fairytale run at the French Open continues, as she is through to her first Grand Slam final. The 24-year-old from Poland stunned 25th-seeded Russian Diana Shnaider, becoming the second qualifier in the Open Era to reach a major final, and the first one at Roland-Garros. She will face Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva, who is also through to her first Grand Slam final after defeating Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk. The 19-year-old is the third-youngest woman to reach the final in this century.
# And lastly, motorsport: Formula One will continue racing in Las Vegas through to 2037 after agreeing to a ten-year contract extension. The famed Nevada Strip, which first hosted a Grand Prix in 2023, is one of three US races on the calendar, alongside Austin and Miami. F1 president Stefano Domenicali says the event has established itself as a premier destination for great racing, world-class entertainment, global business leaders and A-list celebrities. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the races in 2023 and 2025, with Mercedes’ George Russell winning in 2024.
