# Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Willie Aucamp, has welcomed the arrest of two suspects in Mozambique in connection with the murder of South African tourists Dina and Ernst Marais in the Kruger National Park in Limpopo. The arrests were made through cooperation between Mozambican investigators, conservation partners and park rangers. Aucamp says the arrests are an important step towards justice for the Marais family:
# The African People’s Convention raises concern over packaged goods company Tiger Brands’ decision to sell its Beacon confectionery brand, warning the deal could threaten jobs and local manufacturing. Spokesperson Lucas Mphaka says the transaction may affect factory workers, suppliers, transport operators, and small businesses linked to the value chain. He calls for job security guarantees, and urges government, labour and competition authorities to scrutinise the sale:
# George Municipality in the Western Cape urges residents to avoid unnecessary travel as severe weather is expected to affect the area again today and tomorrow. Spokesperson Debra Sauer warns heavy rainfall may lead to localised flooding of roads, low-water crossings and bridges, as well as rising river and stream levels. She urges motorists to exercise caution, avoid flooded roads, and reduce speed. Sauer says emergency services remain on high alert:
# Rugby: Three South African players were honoured in the United Rugby Championship awards. Lions flyhalf Chris Smith won the Golden Boot award, the team’s fullback, Quan Horn, won the Ironman prize, and Stormers eighthman Evan Roos was named Top Try-scorer. Smith was rewarded for his 149 points from kicks, Horn racked up the most minutes in the regular season, having played every single minute, and Roos scored 12 tries. The trio are among the first batch of award winners the organisers announced before this coming weekend’s semifinals.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-27-cents and the euro at 18-rand-90-cents. One British pound costs 21-rand-87-cents and Bitcoin trades at 67-thousand-227-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-464-dollars-41-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 97-dollars-29-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Amazon has launched its Prime subscription service in South Africa, offering free same-day and next-day delivery, video streaming, cloud gaming and exclusive shopping deals. The service costs 59-rand per month or 399-rand per year following a 30-day free trial. Amazon says Prime members will also enjoy access to Prime Video, Amazon Luna, Twitch benefits and exclusive Prime Day discounts. Managing director Robert Koen says the offering combines shopping convenience and entertainment, providing greater value to South African customers.
