# RISE Mzansi urges president Cyril Ramaphosa to fully cooperate with Parliament’s impeachment committee, saying accountability is essential to strengthening South Africa’s constitutional democracy. The party’s Makashule Gana made the call during the National Assembly budget vote debate, arguing no-one is above the law. He says the impeachment process must proceed without interference, and calls for transparency as Parliament considers matters related to the Section 89 independent panel’s report:
# Agriculture minister John Steenhuisen has amended the Animal Diseases Regulations to allow vaccination against bird flu. The move follows concerns raised by the South African Poultry Association over the impact of mass bird culling during outbreaks. Steenhuisen says the new framework will give farmers legal access to vaccination, biosecurity and testing measures to protect flocks and jobs. The department will introduce interim controls aimed at strengthening disease management, safeguarding of food security and poultry industry sustainability.
# Nine suspects have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping of a 51-year-old businessman from Summer Greens in Cape Town. The victim was abducted during a house robbery last Monday after armed attackers stormed his home and stole cash and cellphones before demanding a ransom. A police tracing operation led to arrests in Khayelitsha and later in Saldanha Bay, where the businessman was rescued. Police say he was found tied up and injured and was taken to a medical facility for treatment.
# The National Consumer Commission announced the recall of 337 Hyundai Tucson NX4 N-Line M1 vehicles sold in South Africa in 2023. Hyundai Automotive spokesperson Phetho Ntaba says the affected vehicles may experience unintended emergency braking due to a fault in the forward collision avoidance system. The issue could pose a safety risk. She says owners are advised to contact authorised Hyundai dealerships for a free camera software update:
On to sports news:
# Cricket Canada has appointed lawyer and former Pan American athlete, Dasha Peregoudova, to lead an independent investigation to examine governance and financial control issues within the organisation. This comes after the International Cricket Council suspended Canada’s membership following a series of controversies and allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement. The country’s national teams can continue to participate in ICC events during the suspension. The governing body’s new interim CEO, Bhavjit Jauhar, says they are fully committed to meeting all of the ICC’S compliance requirements.
