In this bulletin:
# Minister Lamola says there is no reason to fear rising sentiments against immigrants
# Fadiel Adams is transported to KwaZulu-Natal to appear in court
# And, FlySafair’s 12-rand birthday sale is back
# Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, says South Africa is seeking a more coordinated approach to migration management across Africa. Anti-immigrant protests in the country in recent weeks have revived concerns about xenophobic violence. Nigeria, Ghana and Mozambique have formally complained to the government about the treatment of their citizens in the country. Lamola says South Africa is strengthening its immigration policy to ensure compliance with the country’s immigration laws:
# The National Coloured Congress member of parliament, Fadiel Adams, has been transported by police from Cape Town to KwaZulu-Natal, where he will appear in court this morning. This was said by the NCC treasurer-general and chief of staff Ebrahim Burton, during an address to a contingent of media outside the Cape Town Central police station. Adams handed himself over to the police after a warrant for his arrest was issued. Police confirmed that the warrant was linked to allegations that he interfered in the investigation into the murder of the former ANC Youth League secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa.
# Western Cape Education Department says it’s closely monitoring weather conditions following the closure of schools in parts of the Eden and Central Karoo districts due to severe rainfall warnings. Schools are expected to reopen on Friday, although this will depend on further weather assessments later in the week. Education MEC David Maynier states learner and teacher safety remains the top priority as conditions continue to be assessed:
# Deputy president Paul Mashatile says the formation of the African Union was a significant milestone in advancing the continent’s unity and development. In his keynote address at the African World Heritage Day event and the 20th anniversary of the African World Heritage Fund in Midrand, Gauteng, Mashatile told delegates the continent should use its cultural and natural heritage to support long-term economic growth:
# Rugby: A familiar face awaits the Stormers in Friday night’s United Rugby Championship match against Ulster in Belfast. Former teammate Juarno Augustus now plays for the Irish team, for whom he scored the winning try in last weekend’s match against Exeter Chiefs. Stormers forward coach Rito Hlungwani says they realise the loose-forward, nicknamed Trokkie, is a good ball carrier who adds an extra layer to the hosts’ attacking game. The Stormers are currently on top of the log and Ulster is eighth.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-64-cents and the euro at 19-rand-47-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-54-cents and Bitcoin trades at 81-thousand-10-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-547-dollars-99-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 108-dollars-71-cents a barrel.
# And finally: FlySafair is celebrating its 12th birthday with a return of its massive annual ticket flight sale. From 9 am today, the airline will release 50-thousand one‑way seats across its domestic network for 12 rand each. However, given the current spike in jet fuel pricing due to the Middle East conflict, airport taxes and applicable fuel surcharges will be added on top of the base fare price. FlySafair says that, as with previous sales, there will be a waiting room to ensure a fair sale experience for customers.
