Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up, we look at rugby: The Stormers’ Springbok scrumhalf, Cobus Reinach’s United Rugby Championship is over after sustaining a long-term knee injury against Glasgow Warriors on Saturday. Coach John Dobson says Reinach’s absence puts them under a bit of pressure, but they can still call on Stefan Ungerer, Imad Khan and Dewaldt Duvenage. The Stormers play their remaining group matches against Ulster in Ireland and Cardiff in Wales.
Meanwhile, the Stormers, the Lions and the Bulls all still have a chance of securing home quarterfinals. The Stormers top the log after annihilating Glasgow Warriors on Saturday, while the Lions improved to third after beating Connacht in Johannesburg. The Bulls are currently in sixth position after a nail-biting victory over Scarlets in Wales, and can still clinch a quarterfinal at Loftus in the final two league matches. The Sharks can’t qualify for the quarterfinals anymore.
# Athletics: The inaugural Simbine Classic begins today at Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria, marking the country’s first World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting. South African sprinter Akani Simbine says the event gives local athletes a chance to earn ranking points and compete globally at home. He highlighted gaps in grassroots development to SABC News, urging more investment in disadvantaged communities to unlock talent and inspire future champions to access sporting programmes:
# Golf: The 156th British Open will be hosted at the Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Club in England in 2028. It returns for the first time since 2012, when Ernie Els won a second time. This year’s Open will be hosted at Royal Birkdale, while the tournament will return to St Andrews in Scotland next year. R&A CEO Mark Darbon says significant work has been done at Royal Lytham:
# And soccer: Croatia and AC Milan’s captain, Luka Modric’s World Cup is in doubt after fracturing his cheekbone during Sunday’s Serie A match against Juventus. He clashed heads with the opponents’ midfielder, Manuel Locatelli, and underwent a successful operation later. Croatia’s governing body says the 40-year-old veteran of four World Cups will do everything possible to be fit for this year’s tournament in Northern America, starting on 11 June. Croatia will face England, Ghana and Panama in Group L.
