# The Judicial Service Commission has recommended Gauteng deputy Judge President Aubrey Ledwaba for appointment as Judge President of the province’s High Court Division. Ledwaba, who was the sole candidate for the position, has been serving in the division’s leadership since 2013. The recommendation now moves to president Cyril Ramaphosa for final appointment. If approved, Ledwaba will officially take over leadership of the country’s busiest court division, overseeing case management and judicial administration across Gauteng.
And, Judge Ledwaba has said that he is aware that bribery allegations against him at the Madlanga Commission are unsubstantiated however could damage the integrity of the judiciary. During his interview, Judicial Service Commissioner Maboku Mangena questioned why he did not consider special leave given concerns it was in the best interest of the judiciary. He said he had consulted senior and retired judges for guidance on the matter:
# The Young Intelligent Minds of South Africa labelled Parliament’s ad hoc committee probing alleged criminality, corruption, and political interference in the criminal justice system a failure and a waste of state resources. The advocacy group’s spokesperson Jeffrey Mabunda says the committee became politicised, lacked expertise, and failed to interrogate key witnesses and cases properly. He argues that the committee’s scope was too narrow, failing to hold important figures accountable and leaving unanswered questions.
# Cricket: Indian players are dominating the latest Wisden awards, regarded as the most prestigious in the sport. Four Indian men are among the publication’s five players of the year – Shubman Gill, Ravidra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant and Mohammed Siraj – and the fifth is English opener Haseeb Hameed. Gill also received the Wisden trophy for best Test performance for his 330 runs in the second Test against England at Edgbaston. The leading men’s player is Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc, and the leading women’s player India’s Deepti Sharma.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-34-cents against the rand and the euro at 19-rand-28-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-19-cents and Bitcoin trades at 75-thousand-490-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-798-dollars-58-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 93-dollars-18-cents a barrel.
