# The Western Cape’s Police Oversight and Community Safety MEC, Reagan Allen, has condemned the killing of an off-duty police officer and his friend in Khayelitsha on Friday evening, on the eve of National Police Day. Allen says the officer was affiliated with Cape Town Central SAPS but was stationed at court. A manhunt is underway for the perpetrators, as authorities seek justice in response to this tragic incident:
# Israeli human rights organisation, Israelis Against Apartheid, has warned Israel may face further legal action if it does not address its policies. Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has criticised the ruling by the International Court of Justice, describing it as outrageous and discriminatory against the Jewish State. The ICJ ordered Israel to prevent and punish incitement to genocide and to ensure the provision of humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza. Israelis Against Apartheid‘s representative, Ofer Neiman, says the ICJ ruling has great significance:
# The US Trade and Development Agency is hosting a 14-member South African clean energy sector delegation from today until 7 February. The delegation will engage with US companies, observe demonstrations of advanced US technologies, and aim to foster partnerships to fast-track South Africa’s green hydrogen ecosystem. The agency will also conduct a public business briefing in Houston to educate US companies on forthcoming green hydrogen commercial prospects. This comes as South Africa prioritises green hydrogen in its energy transition.
# Rugby: Lions flyhalf Jordan Hendrikse missed a 55-metre penalty at the death as the Bulls pulled off a dramatic 30-28 victory over their neighbours in their United Rugby Championship Jukskei derby at Loftus Versfeld yesterday. The dramatic end to a pulsating game saw the Bulls moving into fourth place on the URC log and putting themselves into the top tier as teams take a two-week break at the start of the Six Nations. The Lions’ losing bonus-point moved them above Munster into 10th position, but they could have been fourth if the kick went over.
And, we end with more news related to the sport: The Springboks’ director of Rugby, Rassie Erasmus, has been hospitalised after a freak accident. SA Rugby says in a statement Erasmus is recovering following a medical procedure for chemical burns he sustained in the accident, while using a powerful detergent product. The statement says Erasmus is not in any long-term danger, and is otherwise in good health and expects to return to full-time work next month.
