Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# The Green Connection says it is appalled by the actions of government and PetroSA regarding the appointment of Equator Holdings to fund and rebuild critical gas infrastructure. The organisation’s Liziwe McDaid says not only did Equator Holdings not qualify for the awarded tender, but it neither has the track record nor the required skills for this work. She says it is disturbing to think that government and PetroSA could insist on putting work, worth over 21-billion-rand of offshore oil and gas, in the hands of a beginner:
Meanwhile, the DA says it has submitted a Promotion of Access to Information Act application to PetroSA for records of the decision that informed the awarding of the tender. Equator Holdings is run by notorious political operator Lawrence Mulaudzi, who was implicated in the Mpati commission’s report into corruption and misconduct at the Public Investment Corporation. The DA’s Kevin Mileham says Equator Holdings did not meet the tender specifications:
# And finally: Scientists in Germany hope a breakthrough in fertility research will save the critically endangered northern white rhino, of which only two females remain on the planet. Experts achieved the very first in vitro fertilisation pregnancy after transferring a laboratory-created embryo of a southern white rhino into a surrogate mother. It is now hoped the procedure can be repeated with the northern white, which is a closely-related sub-species. BBC News reports the northern white was once found across central Africa, but were wiped out due to the demand for rhino horn.
