Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with cricket: Proteas opening batter Quinton de Kock overtook the legendary AB de Villiers as South Africa’s highest run-scorer in T20 World Cups. His 59 in yesterday’s thriller against Afghanistan propelled him to 737 runs, surpassing De Villiers’ 717. The Proteas eventually prevailed in the second super over after squandering the chance to bowl Afghanistan out in the 20th over. The first super over was tied, whereafter Afghanistan couldn’t reach the target of 24 in the second one. South Africa’s next group match is against New Zealand on Saturday.
# Rugby: The Stormers have ensured their flyhalf depth for the next few years with Jurie Matthee extending his contract until 2029. He is vying for the position with Springbok number ten Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Bok fullback Damian Willemse, who can also play at flyhalf. Twenty-five-year-old Matthee joined the Cape team in 2023 and has since proved himself as a match-winner. Director of rugby John Dobson says he is respected by his teammates as well as the opposition, and the Stormers are delighted to keep him long-term.
# Golf: Four-time major winner Ernie Els headlines a strong South African field for the NTT Data Pro-Am, which started at the Fancourt Estate in George in the Western Cape this morning. The 56-year-old will be joined by defending champion Wilco Nienaber, who is part of an exclusive club of only four players to have won this title twice in its 31-year history, and rising star Casey Jarvis. The field also includes Spain’s Pablo Ereno and DP World Tour winners Eddie Pepperell and Matthew Baldwin from England.
# Soccer: The Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates at Johannesburg’s FNB stadium will be a sold-out affair. All tickets for the highly anticipated encounter were snatched up in record time both online and at retail outlets, while lots of supporters had been left empty-handed. The organisers advised fans without tickets not to turn up at the venue on the 28th as security will be at high alert. The lucky ones who secured tickets are asked to arrive early to enjoy the entertainment.
# And, Olympics: Sarah Schleper and Lasse Gaxiola from Mexico will make history in Northern Italy this weekend when they become the first mother and son to compete at the same Winter Games. Forty-six-year-old Schleper will compete in Alpine skiing and 18-year-old Gaxiola in the giant slalom. But they won’t be able to cheer each other on, as Gaxiola will compete in Bormio and Schleper in Cortina. Schleper will also become the oldest female Alpine skier at the Games, and the first to appear at seven Games.
