# The Madlanga Commission will resume its public hearings today as it continues to investigate allegations of criminality, corruption and political interference in the police and criminal justice system. The commission delivered its interim report to president Cyril Ramaphosa on December 17. Commission spokesperson Jeremy Michaels says the commission will continue to hear evidence from people implicated in the serious allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and other witnesses. He adds that the commission will continue to pursue its mandate:
# Transnet says it continues to accelerate the modernisation of ports and strengthen South Africa’s position in regional and global trade. This comes as the state-owned entity has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding with Belgian port entities, Port of Antwerp-Bruges International and the Antwerp/Flanders Port Training Centre. The agreement establishes a framework for cooperation in port operational excellence, digitalisation, sustainability, infrastructure planning, and regional corridor development. Transnet says this partnership introduces global best practices, technical training, benchmarking, and advisory support to build long-term institutional capacity within its divisions.
# An investigation has been launched after ballot papers used in the ANC’s recent regional elective conference in Johannesburg were found in a house in Pretoria. The ballots are believed to be linked to last month’s controversial conference, which elected Loyiso Masuku as regional chair and saw the defeat of Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero. ANC NEC member and Convener of Deployees to Gauteng, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, says a detailed report will be submitted to the relevant party structures:
# New Zealand police have confirmed that six missing people buried by a landslide that hit a popular campsite in Mount Maunganui are unlikely to be found alive, with operations moving from rescue to recovery. Two teenagers are among those who remain unaccounted for, with the youngest aged 15 years old. Police Superintendent Tim Anderson says they had to suspend recovery efforts on Sunday after a contractor driver noticed potential instability on the face of the landslide:
# Cricket: The Sunrisers Eastern Cape won their third SA20 title after beating Pretoria Capitals by six-wickets at a sold-out Newlands in Cape Town. After being put into bat, the Capitals posted 158 for seven with Dewald Brevis smashing 101 off 56 balls, while Marco Jansen took three wickets. In reply, Matthew Breetzke scored an unbeaten 68 with Tristan Stubbs scoring 62 as the Sunrisers reached the target with four balls to spare. Sunrisers have now won three of the four SA20 tournaments.
