BULLETIN SPORTS NEWS 15 January 12:30 pm
Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with rugby: The All Blacks have parted ways with coach Scott Robertson, two years into his four-year contract. The 51-year-old came under huge pressure following a first-ever away defeat to Argentina and a record 43-10 loss to South Africa in Wellington last year. Robertson says following the end-of-year review, he believes it’s in the best interests of the team for him to step aside. He says his departure will give the new coaching group time to prepare and take the team into the next World Cup.
More rugby news is that Springbok lock Jean Kleyn will join Gloucester in England at the end of the season. He announced his departure from Irish club Munster after ten years. Kleyn joined Munster in 2016 and played for Ireland in the 2019 World Cup before Bok coach Rassie Erasmus lured him back to South Africa. He then played for the Boks in the 2023 World Cup. Gloucester’s director of rugby, George Skivington, says he admired Klein for a long time for his edge, experience and winning mentality.
# Cricket: Sunrisers Eastern Cape secured their place in the SA20 playoffs when they recorded a comprehensive 61-run victory over Joburg Super Kings at St George’s Park in Gqeberha. Sunrisers debutant James Coles scored an unbeaten 61 to lead the homeside to 178 for five in their 20 overs. In reply, Senuran Muthusamy took three wickets as the visitors slumped to 117 all out. Muthusamy says overall their performances have been good so far:
# Soccer: 2021 champions Senegal will face hosts Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations final in Rabat on Sunday. Sadio Mane’s second-half goal was enough to seal a 1-0 victory for Senegal against record seven-time champions Egypt, and reach their third final of the last four AFCONs. Meanwhile, Morocco saw off Nigeria 4-2 on penalties to reach their first final since 2004, as they bid to lift the trophy for the first time since 1976. Egypt and Nigeria will contest the third-place play-off in Casablanca on Saturday.
# And finally, Olympics: Ticket prizes for the 2028 Games in Los Angeles in the US starts at 28-dollar, or 460-rand. The registration process for tickets opened yesterday for would-be spectators to enter a random draw for all events. This window will remain open until the middle of March. Successful bidders will be informed via email and given a time slot to purchase tickets the next month. A million of the cheapest tickets will be available, while about one-third of all tickets will sell for less than one-thousand-600-rand.
