Good afternoon, here is your Good News:

# Gauteng premier, Panyaza Lesufi, together with Education MEC, Matome Chiloane, have handed over 560-million-rand in bursaries. This is to over four-thousand top-achieving 2023 matriculants from the province’s no-fee paying and from schools for learners with special needs. This is through the Gauteng City Region Academy Bursary Scheme. The bursary covers tuition, books, accommodation, transport allowance, a once-off laptop allowance, and a living allowance. It also covers undergraduate studies, as well as postgraduate studies. More than 90-percent of the scheme’s beneficiaries are black learners while almost 60-percent are women. 

Meanwhile, the Road Accident Fund says it will be supporting six top provincial learners in the Special Education Needs Category with bursaries to study at tertiary institutions. The bursaries include tuition fees, accommodation, textbooks, stationery, medical expenses and a student allowance for the successful duration of their courses. The RAF’s manager, Noluthando Mvabaza, says in addition, the fund will sponsor the top three national learners with specialised laptops, cellphones, earphones, smart walking sticks and sensors to address their special educational needs:

# During December last year, over 400-thousand visitors explored Western Cape and Cape Town attractions, including the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, Cape of Good Hope, and Robben Island. The Cape Town International Airport’s international terminal saw a 17-percent year-on-year growth last month, while the domestic terminal recorded a 21-percent year-on-year growth. MEC of Finance and Economic Opportunities, Mireille Wenger, says following what has been a record-breaking tourism season for the province, everybody must now harness this momentum towards further growing the economy:

# The City of Ekurhuleni has launched its Clean Your Kasi, Manje Namhlanje campaign. This grassroots initiative aims to address the persistent issue of illegal dumping and the grass-cutting backlog that has developed across the metro. The city’s spokesperson Zweli Dlamini says the campaign aims to promote greater cooperation with residents and communities to look after their immediate environment:

# And finally: South African film, Runs in the Family has scored a GLAAD Media Award nomination in the Outstanding Film, Streaming or TV category. The film follows the adventures of an Indian dad and his transgender son as they cross South Africa to rescue the son’s mother from a rehabilitation clinic. Now streaming globally on Netflix, Runs in the Family, has been nominated alongside Beyoncé’s Renaissance, Rustin, produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s production company Higher Ground, and All Of Us Strangers, amongst others.
