In this bulletin:
# Saftu condemns Donald Trump’s claims on Africa
# Standard Bank analysis says financial pressures make January challenging
# And, the traffic authorities show zero tolerance to bribery and corruption in three provinces
# Union federation Saftu says it unequivocally condemns the reckless, imperialist, and deeply racist statements and actions of US president Donald Trump. It says this is over his recent claims that he has brought peace between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and his arrogant assertion that African countries want him to come and take their minerals. Saftu’s spokesperson, Asive Dyani, says these assertions are factually false:
# For many South Africans, January feels unusually long due to the gap between December and January paydays. Standard Bank analyst Shené Mothila says public holidays, year-end leave, and festive spending make early January financially challenging. Mothila says customers should plan and manage finances more effectively:
# The Road Traffic Management Corporation says a total of eight motorists have so far been arrested for attempting to bribe officers since the start of the festive season road safety campaign this month. The arrests were made in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Gauteng. RMTC’s spokesperson, Simon Zwane, says they are encouraged to witness the courage shown by traffic officers to deal with bribery and corruption:
# Netball: Proteas coach Jenny van Dyk says the scoreline doesn’t show how deep her players had to dig to beat Uganda and clinch the Africa Cup in Malawi yesterday. South Africa won 56-34 after leading from the start, securing their record fifth continental crown. Van Dyk says they knew Uganda would make them work hard, and they needed to have a very solid game plan. She thought they would need at least 60 goals to win the match, but is delighted with the result.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 16-rand-79-cents and the euro at 19-rand-72-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-47-cents and Bitcoin trades at 89-thousand-566-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-328-dollars-11-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 60-dollars-60-cents a barrel.
# And lastly, Sir Cliff Richard has revealed he had been treated for prostate cancer during the past year. The 85-year-old British singer says it’s in remission, and backs calls for a national screening test for men. He was about to embark on a tour of Australia and New Zealand when the cancer was discovered during a routine pre-tour medical. The UK National Screening Committee decided earlier not to recommend mass screening for prostate cancer, and proposed a targeted screening programme every two years for men with specific genetic mutations.
