# French president Emmanuel Macron has committed to spending over 20-billion-rand on polar research between now and 2030, amidst concern over the world’s melting ice caps and glaciers. According to reports, the plight of the Earth’s polar regions and glaciers has sparked alarm among many scientists, as heatwaves at both poles look set to be a regular occurrence. Experts have warned that half the world’s 200-thousand glaciers are set to disappear by the end of the century. Macron says this is a present and accelerating threat that needs urgent attention.
# The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, together with the Sustainable Finance Coalition, has developed Biodiversity Management Agreements. The agreements were developed in consultation with the Wilderness Foundation Africa and will be implemented by three private rhino and lion owners in Limpopo. These are the first Biodiversity Management Agreements to be developed and implemented in South Africa. The department says in terms of the agreements, the landowners amongst other things, have undertaken to comply with all legal obligations relating to the management of lions and rhinos, as appropriate.
# And finally: Western Cape MEC of Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers recently handed over Slangrivier title deeds and 177 solar geyser panels to be installed at the Railton housing project in Swellenddam. The housing project is earmarked to yield 950 housing units, with 240 units expected to be handed over before March next year. Simmers says Railton is now one of the five projects in which the energy crisis mitigating initiative will be piloted once the solar geyser have been installed:
