# Minister Godongwana says the Leaders’ Summit has boosted South Africa’s global standing
# The DA raises alarm over the fire risk in Gauteng hospitals
# And, the EU leader says three elements are key to a Ukraine peace deal
# Finance minister Enoch Godongwana says the G20 Leaders’ Summit was a success in profiling South Africa as a top emerging economy. The minister briefed the media after president Cyril Ramaphosa wrapped up the two-day summit in Johannesburg on Sunday. Godongwana says that leaders are expected to take the recommendations emerging from the summit into the upcoming meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in April next year:
Meanwhile, minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, has declared the G20 Leaders’ Summit a victory for multilateralism, highlighting the growing global consensus. The summit concluded on Sunday with a declaration being adopted by an overwhelming consensus. Lamola says the Global South is now demonstrating a level of leadership not previously seen, while acknowledging that the international institutions established after the Second World War have served the world well:
# South Africa will boost its rail industry footprint as the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition leads an outward selling mission to Madrid this week. The delegation will participate in Rail Live 2025, a premier global exhibition for rail technology and innovation. The four-day event will see nine South African companies showcase local capabilities in rolling stock, signalling, engineering, and digital mobility. Officials say the mission supports digitalisation, decarbonisation, and diversification while expanding market access and strengthening global partnerships.
# The DA says many Gauteng hospitals remain serious fire hazards despite millions paid to companies linked to deputy president Paul Mashatile’s sons. DA’s Jack Bloom says a departmental report shows wide compliance gaps as five hospitals scored above 90-percent, while Jubilee Hospital performed worst at 52-percent, with multiple prohibition notices. Major facilities like Charlotte Maxeke and Baragwanath sit below 80-percent. Bloom is calling for an urgent investigation into 46.7-million-rand spent on fire safety contracts, saying patient and staff safety cannot be compromised.
# European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says any credible and sustainable peace plan for Ukraine must first and foremost stop the killing and end the war. The draft 28-point proposal by the US to end the war in Ukraine includes many concessions to Russia, including Kyiv ceding territory it controls in the east of the country, and halving the size of its military. Von der Leyen says three elements are key to a Ukraine peace deal:
# Golf: South Africa’s Casey Jarvis won the Vodacom Origins of Golf Final in a playoff at the Pezula Golf Estate in Knysna. He signed for a final round of 65 to finish regulation play tied for the lead with compatriot Barend Botha, who carded a 64, on 24 under par. Jarvis eagled the third playoff hole against Botha’s birdie to secure the victory, his second win in three weeks on the Sunshine Tour. Christiaan Burke, who led from day one, shared third place with Albert Venter.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-38-cents and the euro at 20-rand-1-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-75-cents and Bitcoin trades at 86-thousand-577-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-55-dollars-96-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 61-dollars-82-cents a barrel.
