Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# President Ramaphosa says the Global Fund Summit is a milestone for global health
# Eskom reports a stable power system as generation recovery gains momentum
# And judges block Donald Trump from cutting grants to US cities and counties
# President Cyril Ramaphosa says the 8th Global Fund Replenishment Summit comes at a critical time as multilateralism weakens and global health cooperation is tested. Speaking at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Nasrec, Johannesburg, Ramaphosa stressed the need for resilient health systems, including expanded local manufacturing of medicines. He encouraged investment in health to achieve true health equity:
Ramaphosa also announced that South Africa is pledging 630-million-rand to support global efforts to end HIV, TB and malaria. Speaking at the 8th Global Fund Replenishment Summit, Ramaphosa said the commitment reflects a shared duty to build universal health coverage and resilient health systems. Ramaphosa thanked partners for early pledges totalling nearly 74-billion-rand, noting South Africa’s contribution includes support from Goodbye Malaria and Anglo American:
And world-renowned economist, professor Jeffrey Sachs, has sharply criticised US president Donald Trump, calling his initial G20 Summit boycott a tantrum driven by a four-year-old mentality. Speaking at UNISA’s 2025 Founder’s Lecture, Sachs linked the snub to fading Western dominance, praising South Africa’s global justice stance. This comes as President Ramaphosa rejected a US request for chargé d’affaires Marc Dillard to attend only the summit’s closing ceremony.
# Eskom says the national power system remains stable, driven by sustained improvements from the Generation Recovery Plan. Spokesperson Daphne Mokoena says the Energy Availability Factor has risen to 70.06-percent month-to-date, up from 63.02-percent last year, reinforcing energy security and grid stability. She says that reduced reliance on diesel reflects excess capacity, with no load-shedding expected this summer:
# Two federal judges yesterday separately blocked President Donald Trump’s administration from unilaterally imposing new conditions on Department of Homeland Security grants of six-billion-rand to cities including San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York. A US District Judge ordered this in San José, and a District Judge in Chicago did the same regarding grants to Boston and several other cities. Both judges said the Trump administration likely violated the law when it issued executive orders that sought to cut off DHS funding to local governments unless they ended programs that support diversity, equity, and inclusion.
# And rugby: Irish hooker Dan Sheehan believes today’s Test against the Springboks in Dublin will provide the hosts with a great marker to show the level of their side. Ireland started the November window by losing to the All Blacks before beating Japan and annihilating the Wallabies. Sheehan says they will go out with an attacking mindset, but must focus on sticking to their game plan and not wait and see what the world champions bring. Kick-off at the Aviva Stadium is at 7.40 tonight.
