# Police Ministry chief of staff, Cedrick Nkabinde, has denied telling anyone that businessman Brown Mogotsi is a close associate of Police minister Senzo Mchunu. He returned to the parliamentary ad hoc committee after being sent away to clarify earlier conflicting information. According to Nkabinde, he first received Mogotsi’s contact number from Mchunu to get updates on last year’s police standoff with illegal miners in Stilfontein in North West:
# Emirates will introduce a third daily flight on its Dubai–Cape Town route from 1 July 2026, boosting capacity by over 600 seats a day. The Boeing 777 service follows the airline’s newly enhanced codeshare agreement with South African Airways. Emirates says South Africa remains a cornerstone of its African network. Western Cape premier Alan Winde welcomed the move, saying more direct flights strengthen tourism and jobs. The expanded codeshare improves seamless travel across South Africa and 13 African destinations.
# The City of Cape Town says a total of 632 vegetation fires were reported across the metro with in a week. The strong southeasterly wind that has been very prominent since the start of the month has been a contributing factor. Mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says most of the fires required multiple resources, with crews working for hours under trying circumstances to bring the fires under control:
# At least 20 people have been killed including two children, and dozens were wounded when an overnight Russian drone and missile attack hit two blocks of flats in the western Ukrainian city of Ternopil. Local officials says it’s one of the deadliest Russian strikes in the region since the full-scale war began in February 2022. Another 66 people were wounded, 16 of them children. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky says Russia had fired more than 470 drones and 47 missiles, leaving significant destruction. He warns people could be trapped under the rubble.
# Golf: South Africans Garrick Hugo, currently ranked 52nd, 75th-ranked Christiaan Bezuidenhout and 85th-ranked Erik van Rooyen are firmly within the Top 100 players in the PGA Tour for the 2026 season. All three have entered this year’s final tournament of the tour’s FedExCup autumn season – the RSM Classic starting at Sea Island in Georgia in the US tomorrow. The tournament is the final and crucial opportunity for players hovering around the cut-off line to secure their full playing privileges for the next season.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-15-cents and the euro at 19-rand-87-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-51-cents and Bitcoin trades at 91-thousand-558-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-103-dollars-13-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 62-dollars-57-cents a barrel.
